Emma spent fifteen years teaching many subjects across a broad age range in a variety of schools before becoming a freelance consultant and author and private tutor. Whilst her PGCE is at secondary level, with her specialism identified as geography and religious studies as a second subject, she has taught from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5. Although much of her time has been dedicated to the teaching of geography, she has also contributed to the delivery of other subjects, largely across the humanities. During her years in the profession, she held numerous roles of responsibility alongside her teaching commitments, related both to the taught and extended curriculum. Involvement with staff and pupils at primary level has concentrated on promoting rigorous geography, geographical skills and fieldwork/’taking learning beyond the classroom’, cross-curricular links, global learning themes, higher-order thinking skills and transition.
For the past ten years or so, Emma has worked in a freelance capacity, undertaking a variety of consultancy and authoring tasks, as well as a dedicating some of her time to private tutoring. Much of what she does has a Gloucestershire or south west focus. Nevertheless, with the growth of all things virtual during the recent pandemic, her expertise is now being called upon by schools throughout the UK.
Her overriding aim is to use her creativity to inspire other educational professionals, whether they be PGCE/BEd students, NQTs/ECTs, Classroom Teachers, Subject Leaders, Key Stage Coordinators, Senior Leaders, Head Teachers or Learning and Community Engagement Officers within the heritage sector. It is hoped that they, in turn, will adopt, adapt and develop new teaching activities and provide stimulating learning experiences for all the youngsters that they come into contact with. Ultimately, if this has been achieved, then she feels that she will have had a small, but worthy, impact on our future generation of educators and learners.
