‘What makes the Amazon so amazing?‘ This was indeed the question that we hoped to discover the answer to during our whole day’s workshop. On board today’s event were more than 300 Key Stage 2 pupils and teachers from Radipole Primary School in Weymouth, Dorset (https://www.radipole.dorset.sch.uk/) and Lady Mount Catholic Primary School in Pensby, The Wirral (http://www.ladymount.wirral.sch.uk/). On their arrival into the Zoom meeting, all classes were re-named after a group with an interest in the Amazon, e.g. researchers; farmers; miners; loggers; indigenous people. The Amazon has been in the News rather a lot this past week and for very positive reasons too. Four children were found alive after 40 days following a plane crash and fending for themselves in the tropical rainforest of Columbia (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-65864158). Whilst such an item was not directly related to Brazil, the country that our workshop centres largely upon, it did help to highlight the resilience of the indigenous people and how much we have to learn from them. A slightly smaller and more manageable multi-schools event than our last one and with a northerly contingent; Adriana and myself felt rather outnumbered as the southerly counterparts! What makes the Amazon so amazing?
A slightly smaller scale event than usual, working with Key Stage 2 pupils and teachers from only one school (Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School in Leeds: https://www.corpusprimaryleeds.org/). However, it was a real delight! The youngsters and teachers were fully engaged and enthused throughout the whole day and produced some incredible work. After introducing ourselves and identifying our various locations within the UK (never miss a chance to develop place and locational knowledge!), re-naming groups, outlining the learning objectives and format of the day, it was time for our ‘starter’.
